About the Work Izumi Kato has developed a distinctive artistic world through diverse media, including painting, sculpture, and lithography. This work, “Untitled 1,” marks the artist’s first challenge in creating a new form of UKIYO-E using traditional woodblock printing techniques. Born and raised in the rich natural environment of Shimane Prefecture, Kato’s figurative expressions carry a primitive, almost instinctive quality—overflowing with vitality and an energy that cannot be contained within conventional forms. In this piece, that unique intensity is brought to life through the refined craftsmanship of traditional woodblock printing, resulting in the first work of a new UKIYO-E series.
